Tips for Dealing with Indoor Mice

How to Get Rid of Mice

Do you think you have mice in the property, you need to act quickly.  Mice can be a danger to your property as well as to your health.  At MR Pest Control, we are available to help you to solve this problem and make sure that they do not come back.  Here are our tips to get rid of mice.

Assess whether you have mice in your property

It might sound a bit silly, but you need to make sure that you are actually dealing with indoor mice.  Some people jump to conclusions because they know that a friend has had a similar problem, or they might actually have rats rather than mice.  Rats are larger than mice, and the equipment used to control them is different.  Both will leave similar signs, such as gnaw marks on woodwork, grease marks from where they have rubbed along the bottom of walls, or evidence of food containers that have been chewed.

Telling the difference can be tricky.  If you see them, rats are larger and have thicker, hairless tails, whereas mice are smaller and have thinner tails with some hair.  Also, the droppings can be a good clue, since they leave them all over the place.  Mice droppings are smaller, about ¼ inch long (5-6mm) with pointed ends, whereas rat droppings are up to ¾ inch (18mm) in length with flat ends.  However, the best way is to ask our experts to take a look.  We can let you know if there is any evidence of furry visitors, and if so, what type you have.

Mouse Removal

Take action to get rid of the mice in your property.

The next step is to get rid of the mice in your property.  One option is to get the family a cat, but that is only an option if no one is allergic.  You can also use traps – there are many available options which are humane and do not kill the mice, though this is not always an option.  Beware though – if you catch a live mouse, do not touch it and make sure that you release it a long way from your home, by which we mean at least a mile, so that they cannot come back.  Some people also find that using strong smelling essential oils like peppermint and clove oil can also deter mice, although this will only work alongside other types of mice control options.

Don’t forget around your property as well.  Cut back weeds that are up to the wall, and make sure that things like log piles or compost heaps are a long way from your house walls.

Dealing with Indoor Mice

Prevent mice from returning to your home

Having dealt with mouse removal, make sure that they cannot return.  Firstly, make entry difficult.  Block holes with wire wool, which is impossible to chew through.  Remember that a mouse can squeeze through a smaller hole than you would imagine, so don’t ignore small holes.  Block gaps in cupboards with strong tape to prevent easy movement, and put foods in thick, sealed containers so that they are harder for a mouse to identify and harder to gnaw through.

The most important thing to remember is that MR Pest Control are here to support you.  We can help you to identify what type of pest problem you have.  We know how to get rid of mice quickly and effectively, without hassle or damaging your property.  We can also prevent them from returning by making alterations to your property to prevent future visits.
